Hello 3E and 3F,

Your teachers, Sandra and Farideh want you to express your ideas, thoughts, and feelings about our activities in our combined classes on Friday.
What did you think about the Cultural Adjustment Cycle?
Where do you think you are on the cycle? Why?
What did you think of the song? Would you like to learn more songs?

We wish you a happy weekend. Maybe you can try country-western dancing tonight.

  5. Hi ,
I think there are many things which is politeness manners. For instance , In my country, when I meet older people , I respect him and give him any help if he needs .On the other hand, there are some rude manners. For instance , some people speak loudly during the eatting .
    Have a nice day......

  8. Hello,

I think different countries have different manners, some polite manners in your country but impolite other countries. For instance, shake a hand when you met someone first time is a polite manner, but some countries can't understand that, maybe they think that is impolite,so we shuold realize some others manners and improve our acknowledge.
In our country, when you ate foods you can't talk to other, because they think is rude, because when you taught, your spittle would into their rice or other foods and finished foods you should help them to wash dishes, set a table. You studied at school, when class started you should stand up and said good morning or good afternoon to teacher, teacher said sit down, you will be sit.
If you want to realize more manners about my country, you can send me a email,I will tell you.
Have a good day and happy Valentine's day!

    1. Sophie,

These are good examples. I am curious about the position of small children. Do they eat at the same table as adults? Are they allowed to talk? Can they leave the table when they are finished eating, or should they wait until everyone has finished?

    2. Sandra,

How are you today?I'm very happy you want to realize more about our country.Small chidren can't eat at the same table,in general, young children shuold sit in the same table, like your sisters, brothers, our parents and uncle, aunt or other elder people sit in the same table, they can drink, smoke and speak somethings we don't understand.Allowed to talk is not better, although I don't kown why we can't speak allowed to them,my parents always told me you couldn't talk when elder people spoke,it's not good manners, but if they asked somethings about you,you can told them. They should wait until everyone has finished,it's respect for them, when you finished eating, you can listen to them conversation or do some other things that you like, but you should quiet and sat in your seat.
      Have a good weekend~~

  17. Hi there,

I hope to send a useful time during the week end. I recommended to read the story about Titinac Story . It is very helpful and useful . It is easy to understand ,also the book supports pictures to easy the meaning ,or what is going on in the story.
Finally , I recommended to read the story . I You can barrow the book from teacher's Sandra.
And I am so happy to put a brief summary about it .
    Titanic Summary
The Titanic was an impressive vessel. Everyone wanted to travel on the vessel,
especially on vacations. Many people traveled on vacations around the lands. Some people chose to travel on the Titanic. It was a massive vessel. It consisted of a lot of rooms and levels for different social classes. In 1902, there was journey on the Titanic. Many people registered to have a happy time on the giant ship. There were 2010 passengers (men, women, and children). They traveled on board and spent an exciting time. After four days, at midnight, the Titanic hit an iceberg near Canada. Most people felt afraid. At that time, the occupants woke up and all women and children cried. Although, there were many lifeboats, they didn't have enough to save all the people. To sum up, The Titanic went down in the sea and a lot of people died. It was such a sad story

    Have a nice weekend

    2. Most of the words in my brief summary get it from the great story. I encourage evryone to read it. Some books have a good scenario ,but they don't have supporting picture to help reader to understand.
hints. The book of accdmic writting is the best book I have ever seen .So you can get the processes of writting.

  18. Time seems past so fast, I've been here for two months.
After study at here four weeks, i can see my writhing is getting better. At least i have some ideas in my mind. I know the construction about the writing, every paragraph has the main idea, some examples and details to support your main idea. Also i know the form about an academic writing.
Here in the US, we have to help the reader to understand our writing :) You know, in my country, my writing wasn't that bad, because we don't need that form in body paragraph. We just express our ideas, it's much easier.

I want to talk about the writing text we had on Friday. Why is the Internet so important to me?
In nowadays, the Internet become more and more popular and important, it's already been a part of my life. I can't leave it until a new powerful technology comes. There are some reason as follow.
)1 fast and free (i compared the past we send a letter, it takes long time)
)2 useful ( we can do everything we want, like movies, listen to music so on)
)3 new trend (all my peers use it, and i just follow it. )
You know, i have some ideas, but i still can't express myself in half hour.
I hope you can share your opinions with me about writing, Thanks my peers.

    Presidents Day Lesson
    by elcivics.com

Presidents Day can also be written as President's Day or Presidents' Day. Presidents Day started as a holiday to celebrate George Washington's birthday on February 22, but was changed to the third Monday in February in 1971. Presidents Day is a federal holiday, so federal offices, schools, post offices, and many banks are closed. Although it is a federal holiday, almost all private businesses and stores are open. Over time, the holiday has expanded to honor Abraham Lincoln, and it is gradually starting to include all of the U.S. Presidents. In the middle of February, grade schools have assemblies, concerts, and plays about Presidents Washington and Lincoln. Some stores have special Presidents Day sales and many towns have patriotic parades or assemblies.

  22. Hi everyone, I want to share an interesting culture bomb with your guys.
I live with an American girl. You know I'm from China. In my country, people think the eating very important, so when people greet, always talk about"Have you had breakfast(lunch or dinner)?" At first, i always ask her"Did you have ....?" I didn't realized what's wrong. Then, one day we talked about something in the gym with another girl. Then my housemate said"She had a friend who comes from Germany, and he told her" in his country, the people don't ask How are u?" So, i said.' Me too, in my country we don't often ask how are u? we always talk about ' Did you eat.....'' We use how are you? when we have long time didn't see each other.' Suddenly she understand why i always ask her about that, and she told me 'at first, she thought it's strange, why did i always her about that? In the US, if you ask about that means you want to eat together, or you want to treat her a mile. I understood now, so i tried to ask her' how are u? How was your class, so on.'
    Have a good night.

  30. The Different Between Teaching in the USA and KSA
Teaching is very important and difficult job in the entire world. The teachers have a lot of responsibility to make there student perfect in all the scientific skills. In KSA and USA a lot of similarity in school teaching like, being on time, communication with the teachers and homework.
Being on time is very important in KSA. Likewise in USA it is very impotent. But being on time in KSA and USA had deferent meaning. In KSA if the student came late he must permission to enter the class. However in USA if the student came late he can enter the class without getting permission.
Communication with the teachers is requirements for the student in KSA. Similarity, communication with the teachers is important in USA too. In KSA the student call their teachers (teacher) to show them some respect. Whereas, in USA the student should not call the teachers (teacher) is not decent the student should call them with first name.
The student must do the homework in KSA. In addition, doing homework in USA is very important too. In KSA the teachers don’t gave the student a lot of homework. On the other hand, the teachers in USA gave the student a lot of homework’s.
In conclusion, teaching in KSA and USA are the same in many ways, but the differences are in the rules and how to deal with student requirements.

I'm sorry you are feeling homesick. It's part of the "Cultural

Perhaps you could invite some classmates to go to the gym with you, or go to the UC to play games, or somewhere on or off campus to eat something. PS I remember when I was in Italy, how is missed my parents, too. Be sure to write to them, and tell them that you miss them, and share stories about your life here.

  46. If it is not too late, you can sign up with Dr. Guinn in ADB (our classroom building) to go to San Antonio on the volunteer trip. Twenty UH students plus leaders will go. LCC students in the past have had a great time on similar trips. The cost is $100, but that pays for transportation, your room, food for breakfast and lunch, and dinner on the Riverwalk for six days. That's quite a deal.

Another idea is to explore all the places in and around Houston that you have not seen yet. For example, you can go fishing in Galveston, go tour NASA, Kemah, drive to Brenham to the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory for a tour and get a big cone for $1.00.

More: Do all the FREE things: Tues.3-7pm Museum of Natural Science is free. Thurs. Museum of Fine Arts is free 9am-9pm and there is a small restaurant inside. There are many more. Look them up.

Go to Black Lab Pub on Montrose St. and play chess outdoors with GIANT pieces.

Invite your classmates to a pot luck picnic in Hermann Park or Memorial Park.

Go to the Zoo and speak English to the animals. :)

Then you need to CHECK your grammar, especially subject/verb agreement and verb tenses. After that, you need to read your paragraph to be sure it is written in correct paragraph form and that it is clear. Finally, read it one more time carefully (with your editing skills) and then press "Publish."

This process may take a few extra minutes, but it is worth it.

In 1872, Phileas Fogg, an English gentleman, bets 20,000 pounds that he can travel around the world in 80 days. Remember, there were no airplanes or other types of high speed travel.
Fogg and his servant, Passepourtout, leave from London, England and travel acrofour continents on their trip. In India, they meet a beautiful princeand save her life. She joins them on the journey and falls in love with Phileas Fogg.

  59. A doctor came to the hospital in a hurry after being called for urgent surgery. When he got to the hospital, he changed his clothes as soon as possible, and he went straight to the block for surgery. There, he found the boy's father who he is going to take care. Seeing the doctor arrived, the father yelled: "Why did you take a long time to come? Don’t you know that my son's life is in danger? Don’t you have a sense of responsibility "?

The doctor smiled and said: "I'm so sorry Sir, I wasn’t in the hospital and I came as soon as possible after receiving the emergency call. Now I want you to slow down, I can do my job."

" What! Slow down? If it was your son can you slow down? If your own son dies what will you do now? ": Said the father angrily.
The doctor smiled again and said, "I will say: Dust we came and to dust we should return, I bless GOD for everything He does. The doctors can’t extend or give life. Go and pray for your son, we will do our best by God's Grace "

"Giving advice is so easy, when we don’t be concerned" Saying the father.

The surgery took several hours. After that the doctor came out happy, "Thank God! Your son is safe, if you have any question, you can ask the nurses. "

"Why is he so arrogant that doctor? Could not he wait a few minutes to give me the information about my son health? ": said the father, seeing the nurse after the doctor left.

The nurse replied with tears down her face: "His son died in a car accident yesterday. He was at the funeral when we called for emergency surgery. Now that he has spared the life of your son, he left running to finish the burial of his son. "
The father stays quiet and so ridiculous.

  60. Often we hear that a dog is a man's best friend. Indeed, pets, not only dogs have become increasingly common residents of our modern day households. Pets bring to the people a sense of liveliness. That after a day of hard work, people can now relax with a sight of their pets jumping happily around them. Then there is also the sense of responsibility. For those who find raising a child a hassel, raising a pet is no easier, however, knowing that you have provided for another living being is a great feeling. It also teaches the next generation the importance of looking after animals and cherishing all living things here on earth.Clearly, pets not only bring excitement into the world but they also help people develop the important sense of responsibility.

  63. Life is just as examination

In 2010, my school celebrated the ceremony for the end of the school year. There was unforgettable lesson that I’ve learned from my old teacher. He said to me and my classmates in a gentle voice: “To be presented right here, you’d been experienced many valuable lessons, challenges at school, especially in each examinations you took. Tomorrow, you’ll face up to more challenges and the harder “examinations” that is your life”
There was something haunt in my head. I’ve never forgotten his words up to now. Life is just as the examination. I have to prepare carefully before doing everything just as I review my lessons for the exams. I’ll finish my work effectively, if I know how to arrange my time. So that, I won’t be a procrastinator. Needless to say, everything will be under control and I’ll get the good results for my work.
Life is just as the examination. Sometimes, I have to face up to many problems in my life and I have to overcome them on my own. It just like the questions in the test. For sure, there’s always one choice correctly for me to choose. Importantly, I’ll be vigilant and consider carefully before making decision.
Life is just as the examination. Success or failure are same as i get the good grades or low grades. It doesn’t matter if I own the low grades, because that is my own effort and I’ll try to get rid of my mistakes to be successful. Life will be my good teacher that help me become more mature and skillful.
Until now. I’m still remember and learn from his words. After all, he was also said: “if you have passed all the examinations during twelve years, I believe you’ll have enough skillful to pass the “examinations” in your life”.

Because of the difference between American culture and Greek culture, Toula's relatives don't want her to marry with an American. In American people's normal viewpoint, when a child grows up ,he will leave his family and his own career. He will live in his own house. It is an opposite with greek. The movie does not show the common cricumstances of American family

Toula loved Ian and wanted to get married with him, but she didn't want her father sadly. Gus loved his daughter very much. I remember he cried and said noone gave him any information about Ian, he was a good person or not, he respect to the others or not... Ian loved Toula, too, and he could do everything to get married with her. He became an official member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Finally they had a traditional Greek wedding. I'm happy with that conclusion!

People belive in Buddha can not marry poeple belive in God. Just looks like Ian from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie, the people belive in Buddha must join and become an official member of God. Many young people fall in love, but in the end they can not marry together just because her or his parents don't accept the other religion. In my opinion, the most important is charater and manner. I agree with your idea, and in my country, many young people fall in love, but their parents can't accept each ather,so some people can't marry to their love person, and some people married only have themselve and their friends. Before I came to America,I told my mother I will marry to America people,of course that is a joke, but my mother said you don't marry to America people,I don't know them, and it's too far for our country,if you have some problems in the future we don't know to connected to you,so they disagree.

    2. In my country we don't care about in which part of the world you from. The most important I think is the religion. I agree with what teacher Sandra said in class ( People who pray together stay together. ) I thing it's important to be in the same religion that mean you have a same idea and same conviction. For example my sister got marry with a man from Congo, and my parents agree and bless their wedding because her husband is in the same religion with us. Before that my sister had a boy friend from the same country but my mom desagree because this man was not in the same religion. At first my sister felt sad, but now she know why mom was desagree, and I think she is happy with her husband. She has now three children. Also I agree with you Tram good manner, and etiquette is very important too. That's what I have to share with you.

Also, we say "the bottom line" is... (A button is round, and it is on your shirt or jacket. You use it to close the front.) Ha ha. These are fun. By the way, you should check your verbs for agreement.

I think everyone had such experience. For example, Tula's father hope she married with Greek man and born many children, but Tula doesn't do like this. She wants different life. Meanwhile, Tula's father also complain she doesn't understand his idea. In modern society, this is a very common social problems. We must learn how to accept each other and change your mind. 96. What We Should Remenber

This is a story about two friends. Their names are John and Jack. John and Jack decided to travel through the desert. It was a long and hard journey. During the trip their water and food started to finish, and John became angry and rude to Jack. However Jack tried to be polite and understanding with John. The friends kept going through the desert. No intentionally Jack fell down and all their water overturned on the ground, John got nervous, and gave a slap to Jack. Jack felt very sad for John, and wrote this event on the sand ground. Jack stayed friendly with John. They kept going. They got to the oasis, excited they ran into the water, and it was so deep and Jack goes drown, but John his friend saved him. Then, Jack wrote this event on rock. John didn’t understand why his friend write so easily on the sand ground when he gave him a slap, and now he wrote so hardly on the rock this last event. So he decided to ask Jack why he wrote on the sand ground the first time, and now he wrote on the rock. Jack smiled and said the first time you did something bad to me, so I wrote this on the sand ground for that the winds blow and erased what you did badly to me. That mean I want just forgot you did that to me. For the second time you saved my life. Then, I wrote this on the rock, so no winds no rain cannot erase this. Because I don’t want to forget that my friend saved my life. If we want to stay friend we should not remember what bad someone did to you, but we should forget the bad experience and remember the good and best things someone did to you.
We should be like the kids they never get angry because someone did bad things to them. They go back in the same place to play with the same friend who beat him yesterday. Why is that? Because he only remembers this is my friend and I had great time with him. We used to be like Kids, why we changed our mind? I don’t know why, but I know we miss a great time only to be angry and resentment with a friend or someone around us. Dear classmates and I, we should try to be like Jack and the kids because the travel, I mean the life is short and we should take all the opportunity we have to have the friends, family, co-worker, bosses, teachers, students no matter what they can do wrong sometimes, or did one time. We should be forgiven and forget. It is a good way to be relax and bless.

  99. Attention 3E and 3F,
There are some rainstorm warnings that include "flash floods."
Pay attention to the weather news. If there is a lot of rain,
drive slowly and carefully. Do NOT drive or walk through deep water,
